So this is meant to be some kind of smoked pale ale kinda thing. I'm not sure how much actual smokiness I'll get out of the rauchmalt, but there should be at least a bit in the background. Hopefully? Putting it together was actually kinda fun since I didn't have any real kind of recipe to go from and just sort of grabbed some random ingredients at the last minute. Although, I think Cole was unconvinced by my antics... "What are you putting in your pale ale? Crystal 60? Maybe I'll use some Crystal 60... You're gonna hop it with what? Hmm.... Hey, what's this, Victory Malt? I don't know what that is, I'll use some." and so on.

The exciting thing about this beer for me was that this is the first beer for which I've actually used filtered water and not just the semi-questionable Ocean Beach (well, and once Carmel Valley) tap water I'd been using up to now. I actually spent the entire day before I brewed this (which was actually a week ago now, I only just now remembered/had time to post about it) running around San Diego trying to find all the parts to build one of those 10,000 gallon water filters out of BYO magazine. And it actually worked and everything. Which is good, because when I say running around I mean around.

The other fun thing about this beer is that when I went in to get my ingredients for it I mentioned to the brew mart guys that they had overcharged the last time and they actually gave me a full refund for the overcharge. Which meant that, since I already had the yeast (got it for free at a QUAFF meeting - w00t!), the entire 5 gallon batch cost me a total of $3 out of pocket. Which means it'll come out to something like $0.06 per bottle. So even if it sucks, who cares! Yay! Of course, as always, I'm hoping for good things out of it but it won't be too heartbreaking if something bad happens either. You know, one of these days I think I'll have to actually mention how each of my beers turned out. I always forget to do that.
